A Break in the Weather

This week has been wonderfully mild, compared with the frigid cold of recent months. Maia got home from school yesterday and immediately joined Montgomery on the swings.

Even taking out the trash was enjoyable...

...maybe...well, at least worth a bit of clowning for the camera...

The only real snow left standing (rather, melting) in the back yard is the poor remnant of the snow fort.

The only problem with wonderful mild weather following significant amounts of snow is muddy swamp effect underfoot. Lots of "take off your shoes, take off your shoes!" as folks come tromping inside...but I'll take it for the glories of a 60-degree February day!

Much love. Take care.

At the Science Fair

Josiah participated in the science fair at school this year. It took him awhile to settle on the topic of his experiment, solar energy, and I never quite got the sense that he was completely pleased with the topic or the project process or progression. Nevertheless, he persevered, and after a significant bit of trial and error, completed his experiment, put together a display board, and thoroughly enjoyed attending the Science Fair...and even explaining his project to the roving teams of judges.

He is already thinking ahead to next year, and is eager to try some sample runs this summer of experiments and studies that are more in keeping with his areas of interests. I can't wait to see what he comes up with. He is an inventor to his soul and his creative ideas are truly awesome! I'd share some here, but I'm really expecting him to patent many of them in the future (seriously), so I'll hold off.

Don't you just love a cheery attitude!

Good job, Moskie!

Take care. Much love.

Missing Journey

Today I saw the most beautiful sunset. The clouds and sky looked like the ocean. The colors were so exquisite. It was almost painfully beautiful. It was as if God had painted it just to create breathtaking beauty. Just to make our hearts stop for a moment. Just to give us a reason to pause and to contemplate the beauty and the wonder of life. I wondered if this was the beauty seen all around you in heaven.

It caught me by surprise as I was driving west. I didn't have my camera and couldn't take a picture to be able to keep it, to hold on to it and see it forever. I drank the moment in and it nourished my soul, and then the road curved and that bit of splendor was gone and I had to look in my rearview mirror to catch the last glimpses. Now that small handful of beautiful wonder lives forever in my memory.

Tonight we are missing Journey.

Much love. Much love.

Delighted!

Maia is delighted!

She had been struggling with the decision of whether to attempt a transfer at her school from the dance department to the theatre department. She entertained the idea in October, made preliminary inquiries, and ultimately decided to continue in dance, mostly because of all of the time she had invested in dance training thus far.

But the theatre continued calling to her. Our always prayer is that our children would be able to identify their God-given gifts early and find their passions. Maia's good problem is that she is very gifted in several areas. When she auditioned for the Baltimore School for the Arts before her Freshman year, she was accepted into both the dance and theatre departments and had to choose which one to pursue. As her goal at the time was musical theatre, the choice was very difficult for her, and she waffled back and forth before finally selecting dance.

She has learned so much in the dance department these past several years (in dance classes four hours every school day), but has always kept one eye on the theatre. She originally intended to pursue theatre in her free time and in the summers. However, majoring in dance is so all-consuming, the rehearsals and performances took up nearly all of her free time during the school year. Then, Maia being who Maia is, she auditioned for and spent most of her summers in intensive dance programs to hone her dance skills.

But, she always kept one eye on the theatre.

Finally, in January, she attended a performance of the Junior Acting Ensemble, and knew, just knew, she was in the wrong department. I was sitting next to her at that performance, and I knew, just knew, she belonged on that stage. However, at this point in her educational pursuit, midway through her Junior year, transferring arts departments is not usually an option. The difficulty is that she takes advanced academic classes, which at a small school such as hers, are very tightly scheduled with usually only one section. So, although she might have transferred into the theatre department as a freshman or sophomore level acting student, her Junior level academic classes conflicted directly with the lower level acting classes. Therefore, the only transfer possibility would be into the Junior Acting Ensemble, a tricky proposition as these talented students have studied acting together for the past two and a half years (and were excellent in their January performance!). Nevertheless, she made the necessary inquiries, requested and received the opportunity to audition, and nervously began preparing a monologue (or three!).

Her original audition date was thwarted by snow, leading to an agonizing wait for another audition date, which then fell during the rescheduled incoming Freshman auditions for the school, so she found herself auditioning with a pool of eighth graders and hoping the acting faculty remembered she was seeking a spot in the Junior ensemble. They did, the audition went well, and after another agonizing two-day call-back wait, she finally got the word she'd been hoping and praying for...she is accepted into the Junior acting ensemble!

She is so delighted and feels like a new chapter of her life is beginning. There are no words to express her joyful anticipation as she waits for her acting classes to begin this upcoming week. And we are all delighted with her. What an answer to prayer! While Maia is a very talented dancer, we feel she is now on a path to operating in her primary area of giftedness. We are so grateful to just have an arts high school here in Baltimore, but even more, to have one in which the faculty is willing to look at each student individually, and help each one craft their own artistic path with excellent training and immeasurable encouragement.

Maia says she's keeping that audition name tag forever!

Go, Maia, go! Run on, run on...well, for now, till the crutches are gone...hop on, hop on!!

Much love. Take care!

The Ice Rink

For several weeks, our family has seen an odd-looking structure in a neighbor's yard. From the street in our vehicle we wondered if it was preparation for a swimming pool, a special grass-fertilization area, a large small animal habitat...we got really creative with our wondering. In the past few days I've noticed that the structure seems to contain a frozen body of water, and correctly supposed we were witnessing the building of a homemade ice skating rink.

Today, as we turned by that corner on our way home, Johngideon yelled out that there was a kid on the ice. I backed up and parked and we sauntered over to see what was what. So, a neighbor I've never met confirmed that indeed the intended creation was to be an ice-skating rink, and that actually, this was not their yard, but they lived a couple of doors down. Turns out her husband grew up in Minnesota, and his father had made him a homemade rink when he was a kid and he wanted to do the same for his kids, but their yard was not flat enough, so the neighbors whose yard we passed daily had agreed to have the rink built in their yard instead, and the project was born.

The men had had a great time building the rink, and adding layers of water until they ended up with a frozen mass. Unfortunately, however, there had been some miscalculations along the way and the rink was not quite level, thus one side had nearly a couple feet of ice, and the other side had barely an inch. No matter to Montgomery and Johngideon who were delighted to be lifted onto the thick side for a few fun moments of slip-sliding around while the sun beat down and we could practically see the valiant creative attempt melting before our eyes. After weeks of frigidly cold weather, we're in for near 60's this weekend, and our neighbor thinks the poor miscalculated rink will probably not make it through.

What a neat idea! Cheers and more cheers to our clever and creatively adventurous neighbors!

...Our back yard is pretty large and flat...

I've asked Craig to build an ice-skating rink next winter. Can you believe...he's actually considering the idea! More on that in 12 months...

Take care. Much love.

A Happy Place To Create...and Be Inspired

Johngideon has been excited for the past couple of weeks with the thought of starting a children's art class on Saturdays. His first class was yesterday, and I was a tad anxious because when we registered, his first choice class (creative construction) was full and he had to sign-up for a drawing class instead. Johngideon likes to do and I wasn't sure drawing for two and a half hours at a clip would hold his interest and I didn't want all that anticipatory crescendo-ing to come crashing down in a disappointing pile of reality. So...I hovered for a bit as the class began, trying to get a vibe for the teacher and what the students were about to do. Finally I rather reluctantly left the classroom.

I needn't have worried for a minute. Johngideon was glowing at the end of the class. He'd had a great time and eagerly showed me his newly created artwork by the wall. The class had been read a story about dragons and each created drawings based on their mental images of the story. Rather than drawing only, they'd created the dragons in their artwork as tissue paper collages. His dragon dominated his drawing and he was quite pleased with the end product. I loved it too!

I am so heart satisfied that he gets to spend a good chunk of time every week in such a wonderful environment created for the sole purpose of people having life space to be creative. What a wonderful treasure to be able to think uninterrupted creative thoughts, and have no agenda or objective other than to just let your creative energies flow for two and a half hours at a time. How peaceful and nourishing to his little soul. And, just look at what we pass on the way to his classroom...

...this awesome wall...

...and this awesome sculpture...

How goose-bumpingly creative! We are so blessed to have such opportunities in life. Thank you, God.

The teacher told him the class runs until April 9th. Somehow he heard August 9th, and was rather disappointed when I  provided the accurate ending date. He said..."well, I hope it goes until August 9th anyway!"

Even though I know better, I said "Me too!"   Ahhh...hope springs eternal!

Take care. Much love.

See, I Told You So...

Gommy came home from school on Thursday bubbling with delight at the silly thought of an upcoming Pajama Day at school her teachers had told the class about. She thought it was a crazy silly funny idea and was thrilled at the wonder-filled thought of wearing pajamas to school. She said it was "tomorrow" and described in great detail her favorite "four princesses" nightgown -- as if I didn't know which one it was :o) -- that she was planning to wear.

Later at home I looked through her entire book bag and found no mention of a pajama day, so I just assumed the teachers were preparing the children for something coming up in the future. I explained this to Gommy, but she still thought it was "tomorrow."

On Friday morning I dressed Gommy in regular clothes, even though she again said it was Pajama Day. I asked Craig to check in with Miss Sophie when he dropped her off, to get the date for the Pajama Day, still believing it would be some future time. Well, as I was dropping off the boys at their schools, Craig rang my cell phone to let me know that, indeed, today was Pajama Day!

As soon as the boys were off, I raced home to grab the favored nightgown, and princess "night" socks (so called because Gommy only wears them when she puts on princess nightgowns), and Gommy's favorite bedroom slippers (given to her by her best school pal Isabella at Christmas). I flew to Gommy's school and checked in at the office, where they called Gommy from her classroom. Holding hands with her pajama-wearing pre-K hall traveling buddy, she lit up when she saw me at the end of the hall, and came running for a big hug. We watched her pajama-ed friend get back to Miss Sophie's class and then headed for the women's rest room to get Gommy changed. When we were inside, I showed Gommy the items I'd brought and said "Gommy, it was Pajama Day today after all."

Gommy looked up at me, put her hands on her hips and said something she's never said before -- and with attitude!..."SEE, I TOLD You So!"

(...afternoon reenactment by trained actress above ;-) ...)

And of course, as I signed out of the school in the office, the secretary handed me the flyer I somehow had missed from Gommy's book bag the day before...

Take care. Much love.

Marvelous Mistake

Johngideon was assigned a puppet project as a kind of book report for the month of January. The instructions were to create any kind of puppet (paper bag, wooden spoon, balloon-head, felt hand, etc) of a character from one of your favorite books read that month. His favorite books of late are the Captain Underpants series, but he was mortified at the thought of taking in a puppet wearing just underwear :o) and decided instead on Gideon from a Gideon's Army book he really likes. Why, oh why, did I suggest it might be fun to make a marionette?

Of course we didn't start on time. Of course we didn't use any of the whole week of days out of school last week to work on it. Of course we thought it would be easier than it turned out to be. Nevertheless, he was a trooper and day after crammy day of puppet-making, he kept his excitement level high, suffered through hot glue ouchies, and frequent Mommy interruptions, until we finally emerged with a completed project late this evening.

Meet Gideon the marionette. Johngideon and I think he looks great. He can't wait to take him in to school tomorrow!

Take Care. Much Love.
